Preamble

The understanding of the World of Work is beyond the common man’s comprehension and therefore it requires expert guidance due to the fact that new and innovative career and professional opportunities emerge almost every day. The society looks at unemployment or underemployment as a result of non-availability of jobs, but it is not so. The unemployment and underemployment among the youth is mainly due to lack of proper career guidance and counselling.

The approach of MLCU towards educating their students is holistic development. While many other components are enlisted in the curriculum, Career Counselling for the students right from the time they join the University is also being addressed. With the passage of time, the University felt that Career Counselling is not something that should be provided just on a one-time basis but it should be provided as a service to the students regularly from one semester to another till they graduate. In such a scenario, where Career Counselling is considered an important ingredient to make a complete package till a student faces the world of work, MLCU intends to broaden its horizon to bridge this gap of supporting the students till they are ready for the job market.

Career Counselling aims to facilitate the students to explore the world of employment and new career avenues and also help students in career planning through counselling wherein they gather information about themselves in terms of their interests, aptitudes and abilities so that they can choose their career more effectively. A career counsellor helps an individual to get into the career that suits their aptitude, personality, interest and skills. It is therefore the process of making an effective correlation between the internal psychology of a candidate with the external factors of employability and courses, prioritizing and choosing the best option besides facilitating experienced professionals aiming at career development. MLCU in its effort to address this demand has set up a Center for Career Development to facilitate the students to face the world of work in a more advanced manner.

Objectives:

  1. To facilitate students to identify the sources of educational and occupational information that enables career decision process
  2. To address the individual development / career development and transitions throughout the lifespan.
  3. To give proper orientation to students on employability skills which will create more avenues for young people to acquire meaningful employment, including self-employment
  4. To follow up on the professional development of the students by training them towards employability skills such as resume building, group discussion and interview skills which in turn can help the students to move into a desired occupation and/or apply in prestigious professional schools for higher studies / employment.
