Bachelor of Science in Community Health

Duration:3 years (6 semesters) + 1 year internship.
Eligibility:Pass in Higher Secondary Science stream(or equivalent +2 examinations)

The Community Health (CH) graduate is a mid-level health worker who has been trained to diagnose and treat common health problems, to provide the initial management of emergencies and to refer appropriately and transfer seriously-ill or injured patients for further care. They can play an important role in meeting the healthcare needs in many countries and the World Health Organization has cooperated with, encouraged and supported many governments in developing the training and practice of Community Health Workers

COMPETENCIES

First year
I&II Semester

The course intends to provide basic input to the students so that they have prior knowledge and be equipped in skills to guide them before they opt for the main disciplines.

This period aims to orient the student to national health systems and basics of public health, medical ethics, medical terminologies, communication skills, basic life support, computer learning, infection prevention and control, environmental issues and disaster management, as well as orientation to the community with focus on gender sensitivity, disability, human rights, civil rights. The students will also acquire knowledge and skills in Basic Sciences like Human Anatomy and Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology.

Second year
IIIand IVsemester

Students are provided with knowledge & skills on pharmacology, Obstetrics & gynecology, pediatrics, medicine & surgery, community medicine & medical ethics.

Students will acquire skills on

  • Basic patient care.
  • Immunization.
  • Administration of medication.
  • Phlebotomy & infusion.
  • Assisting in normal deliveries.
  • Application of ethical, legal practices in their profession.

Third year
V&VIsemester

Students are provided with knowledge & skills on mental health, health education & communication, clinical emergencies, health planning & management, basic research methods & quality in health system.

Students will acquire skills on

  • Wound dressing.
  • Identifying health problems.
  • Giving health education to the communities
  • Quality control in health care.

Fourth year (Internship)

Hands-on application in different hospitals and community health centre.
During this period they will be conducting a project under the supervision of a guide.

Students will be able to:

  • Practice, enhance & strengthen their skills.
  • Collect, analyze, interpret data & write a project report.

Course of the study:

 

  • Theoretical knowledge: Lecture, demonstration, group discussion, guest lecturer, assignments, case studies, seminars & presentations.
  • Practical skills: Health camps, Hospital, Urban & Rural health centers postings, Project works, Case presentation & Internship.
