The Doctor of Philosophy Degree

A Doctor of Philosophy degree, abbreviated as the well-known PhD, is the highest academic degree that can be earned. Earning a PhD requires extended study and intense intellectual effort. To earn a PhD, one must master a subject and extend the body of knowledge of that subject.
To master a subject, a student searches the published literature to find and read everything that has been written about the subject. In most disciplines, a student begins by studying general reference works such as textbooks.  The student must also search scholarly journals, and browse the internet, which is increasingly becoming a repository of academic information.
The essence of a PhD can be summarized in a single word: research. To extend knowledge, one must explore, investigate, and contemplate. The scientific community uses the term research to describe these activities. Research often implies experimentation, but research is more than mere experiments -- it means interpretation and deep understanding. Researchers look for new abstractions, new approaches, new algorithms, new principles, or new interventions.
To complete a PhD, each student must present results from their research to the academic community in a lengthy, formal document called a dissertation or thesis. The student may have to then defend his or her work at an oral examination and in a public forum.  This university also recommends that the research be published in a peer-reviewed journal before the PhD is awarded, so that it receives the affirmation of experts in the discipline. Alternatively, there are non-traditional formats in which the thesis is presented.

PhD Studies at MLCU

MLCU is a development university and so promotes the pursuit of applied research in the social sciences.  Candidates who wish to study issues and problems pertaining to the development of communities are especially invited to apply to MLCU.  Projects that test an intervention to solve a social problem are particularly welcome.  Research that investigates solutions to a community problem is generally multidisciplinary in its approach and will necessitate a broad canvas of thinking.
MLCU also encourages research on indigenous issues, especially indigenous knowledge.  It is important to preserve and revitalize the traditional ways and wisdom of the indigenous peoples of Northeast India and find useful applications to modern life.  Traditional medicine and the fine arts and folklore of the region, especially music, dance and literary forms are other areas of current research at MLCU.

Regulations for the PhD Degree

The regulations for the PhD degrees are framed by the Doctoral Committee and approved by the Academic Council. The current regulations incorporate the UGC Minimum Standards and Procedures for Award of MPhil/ PhD Degree Regulations 2016, published in the gazette of India.
