Farmers’ Market organised by the Department of Management and Commerce Studies, MLCU

Shillong October 13: With the aim to not only provide a platform for local entrepreneurs and farmers, to showcase their organic products but also to give the students the opportunity to interact with the farmers and entrepreneurs, the Department of Management and Commerce Studies, Martin Luther Christian University today organised a Farmers’ Market at the in the premises of the University in Nongrah.

During the inaugural function the Head of department of Management and Commerce Studies, Dr (Mrs) Rupabakor Kharshiiing spoke about the need to not only appreciate and preserve our traditional and indigenous food and its byproducts but it is of the utmost importance to also create sustainable livelihood for all the indigenous farmers and entrepreneurs.

Mr. Janak Preet Singh Sr. Associate, Livelihood Initiatives, NESFAS spoke at length about the different activities that NESFAS is involved in to not only preserve our indigenous ways but also to hep our state to go back to our roots and in the process live a healthy life and also ensures the continuance of our culture and tradition.

The Farmers’ Market was inaugurated by the Chancellor of the University, Dr Glenn C Kharkongor in the presence of the faculty and students of the department and also representatives from other departments of the University.

Stalls of farmers from villages and local entrepreneurs were et up at the premises which included a stall of traditional ryndia products from Khweng Village from Ri Bhoi district, vegetables and indigenous snacks from Laitsohpliah villge, ast Khasi Hills, a stall from Centre of Learning Knowledge and Services with produce from Mawthadraishan, Nongstoin, Mawkyrwat, Jowai, Unsning and Umkei, entrepreneurs like Kara’s  with their pickles, juices and jams, and Wan's Food Processing.
