MLCU's Silent March

Shillong April 26: In the Khasi culture it is said that women are the centre of the society and men surround them to protect them and elders follow to support them,  and so to remind our society of that the male students and faculty members of Martin Luther Christian University took a stand that condemn the heinous act of the inhumane and unfortunate death of Asifa Bano an eight year old who was gang raped and murdered in Jammu and Kashmir.

The Gender Initiative Committee of the Martin Luther Christian University, Shillong today April 26, 2018 organised a ‘Silent March’,  which started from the University Campus in Nongrah and ended in Don Bosco Square,  Laitumkhrah.

The University has deem it crucial to come forward and raise our Voices for our mothers, daughters and sisters.

Speaking at the end of the March,  Mr Russell Warjri,  faculty member MLCU, said that the alarming rate by which women and especially the children are being sexually abused and molested by brazen individuals, in our very own State on a regular basis and how reports of similar crimes floods the media houses should make our society in particular the men very ashamed.  Mr Warjri urged the men of the state and the country as a whole to take a stand but not just a stand but also to take steps to ensure the safety and well being of every female I'm the country irrespective of age,  caste,  creed or religion

He further agreed that if each individual doesn't play a small but effective way to stop violence and heinous crimes against women and children,  the cycle will go on and on and we as a society would have nothing but marches and candle light vigils.

The March was led by male students dressed in traditional Khasi attire and surrounding two ladies in jainsem, and two female students who age appropriate dress code.  This symbolised the basis of Khasi culture where men protect the women.
