Interactive Session on Soso Tham

The Department of English and Communication of Martin Luther Christian University organised an interactive session on The Art and Analysis of Poetry with Dr. Janet M Hujon on the 28th of March, 2019. The programme was attended by the M.A. English students as well as the faculty and staff of the University. The programme started with a welcome song titled “Duitara Ksiar” performed by the students. Remisha Wanniang, a student, gave a brief presentation on the life and works of SosoTham.

Dr.Hujon talked broadly about the great bard Soso Tham and the intricate connection between his works and the Khasi culture, language, vocabulary and the various folk tales. She related the works of this man to world literature differentiating how each stalwart in the world of poetry saw things differently, yet at the same time, positioning the work and the wisdom of this man in the world arena. His literary work delves deep into the psyche and the cultural wisdom of his people.

Dr. Hujon concluded by emphasising on the need for the indigenous and tribal people to learn and appreciate the languages of the world, and yet to retain the knowledge and wisdom that comes with one’s own mother tongue.
