Health Camp at Umtong

The Department of Allied Health Sciences of Martin Luther Christian University organised a Health Camp in Umtong village, Mawkynrew Block.

More than 100 locals, including infants, attended the camp to have their anthropometric measurements taken and vital signs evaluated.

Volunteers from Bansara Eye Care also provided a free eye check up to everyone.

Doctors were made available throughout the day for a free consultation and free medicines were given to the ones who needed them.

The residents of Umtong village lead difficult lives as the condition of the place is not favourable for any agricultural growth. This is because the village is enveloped in fog through most of the summer and is extremely cold during winter. The residents thus have to migrate out of the village in search of livelihood and work as daily wage labourers outside the village. Due to this, they are separated from their families for weeks on end and earn meagre incomes that are barely sufficient to meet their everyday needs. One of the villagers said, “We can never dream of being rich. All we can afford is rice and vegetables, we cannot even afford to eat meat. But inspite of this, we are blessed with happiness and good health.”

The villagers were also greatly appreciative of the efforts of the University in organising such a camp. Speaking to the correspondent, an Umtong resident said, “The only access to healthcare that we have is a PHC that is situated at a considerable distance from the village. We get to go there if we get transportation, if not, we have to forego our checkup. The service provided there is also not very regular. Hence, this camp is really a boon for us as we are getting such a benefit after a very long time.”
