Metanoia 2019

The Department of Computer Sciences of Martin Luther Christian University held its annual tech event “Metanoia” on the 14th and 15th of May 2019. The event is an extension of the Department’s code debugging contest “Bugsmash.” The main objectives of the event is to encourage the students to enhance their programming skills, motivate them to think critically and logically as well as creating awareness on cybercrime and cyber security.

On the first day of the event, the Department organised various tech related contests like a Web Designing contest with Meghalaya Tourism as the theme, a Power Point presentation contest titled “Slide your Thoughts” on the theme-My Experience in MLCU, a Suduko challenge titled “Enigma”, a typing contest titled “Sprinter” and a coding and debugging contest titled “Bug Smash Contest.”

Habak Kuk and Jeremy A. Sohkhlet from the Department of Economics, Commerce and Management won the ‘Slide your Thoughts” and “Sprinter” contest respectively. Kamcha Pancha from the Department of English and Communication won the “Enigma” contest, Baphyllashisha Hynniewta from the Department Of Computer Sciences won the Web Designing contest and Deepika Rajput from the Department of Computer Sciences won the  “Bug Smash” contest.

The main highlight of the event was an awareness programme on cybercrime and cyber security held on the 15th of May 2019. The awareness programme was led by Mr. Arjun Chetry, computer programmer, North Eastern Police Academy. Mr Chetry briefed the audience broadly about how a person’s personal information is becoming increasingly valuable to cyber criminals hence making it a vulnerable asset often targeted and abused by cyber criminals. He also cited many examples of the various ways that cyber attackers employ to perpetrate their cyber attacks like Denial Of Service attacks, Cyber Vandalism, Virus Dissemination besides many others. He also enlightened the audience with the support of slides and videos about how leading global tech giants expand their businesses through unlawful spying and cyber eavesdropping on their consumers.

Mr. Chetry also briefed the audience about the various ways that that they can practice to protect themselves when using their tech gadgets, surfing the Internet or when they plan to sell off their old gadgets. He also gave them various web resources from which they can learn more about cyber security.
