World Tourism Day

The Department of Tourism and Travel Management MLCU, on September 27, 2019  observed World Tourism Day by reaching out to the student community in the schools of Shillong. With the UNWTO  theme for this year’s World Tourism Day being “Tourism and Jobs: Better Future For All”, the students of the Department had interactive sessions with students of St Peter’s School and Brookside Adventist Higher Secondary School to help them examine the  important role of tourism in the economy and its  relation to employment.

The tourism industry has an incredibly wide scope of generating employment in the form of several kinds of jobs and skill management roles. The sessions have therefore imbibed awareness on the significance of tourism and its social, economical and cultural worth. The interactions have also helped the students gain insight on various professional and practical skills required by the tourism industry. Other issues emphasised on during the sessions included sustainable tourism management and the conservation of natural and heritage resources. The message of tourism as a driver of job growth and economic prosperity is also re-enforced throughout the discussions with the students.
