Workshop on Data Mining and Big Data- Techniques and Tools

The Department of Computer Science conducted a one-day workshop on “Data Mining and Big Data-Techniques and Tools” on Oct 21, 2019. The workshop was conducted with the aim of providing insights on techniques of Data Mining and Big Data and the tools available to implement them. Dr. Sufal Das, Assistant Professor, North Eastern Hill University was the resource person for the workshop and started the program with an introduction to Data Mining with the aid of real time examples. He explained the different stages in the process of data mining and the points that have to be taken care of in each step. The speaker also deliberated on clustering and classification techniques. In the second half of the morning session, he also gave the participants an introduction to Big Data. He explained the works he has done in this area and encouraged the participants to join him.

In the post lunch session, Dr. Sufal Das introduced the participants to Waikato Environment for Knowledge Analysis (WEKA), a tool that consists of machine learning algorithms for data mining tasks. He used it to demonstrate the analysing of decision tree algorithms. The participants also performed analysis with their own data set. In the process certain issues like attribute mismatch between the training and testing data were found.

The workshop was concluded with the felicitation of Dr. Sufal Das and the distribution of certificates to the participants from outside the University.
