KHADC mulls institute of traditional medicine

The Shillong Times, 14 February 2011

SHILLONG: The KHADC will propose setting up of an "institute of traditional medicine" in the coming budget session of the Council.

"We will table a Bill on Promotion & Protection of Khasi Traditional Medicine in the upcoming budget session which starts from February 28. The Bill will include a clause on setting up of an Institute of Traditional Medicine," KHADC CEM Pynshngaiñ N Syiem has said. The Council is planning to have a tie-up with the Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU), which provides courses on traditional medicine, for setting up the institute. The KHADC CEM said the institute would take up projects for creating awareness on the importance of preserving the traditional medicinal herbs.

Meanwhile, the Council has constituted a High Power Committee to frame out the modalities for preservation and protection of traditional medicines. "The HPC has been entrusted for registration of Khasi medicinal practitioners," Syiem said. The KHADC had earlier decided to make it mandatory for the traditional medicinal practitioners to register with the Council.

Planning Dept: The KHADC will soon set up a Planning department to look after the overall progress of the functioning of the Council. The department would draw master plans for the various future initiatives and help mobilise resources for the Council. For not having such a department, KHADC CEM Pynshngaiñ N Syiem has said, the Council is lacking on the planning aspect for the past many years. Five resource persons from different fields would soon be appointed as members in the department who would appoint the planning officers, according to the CEM.
