Duration: 2 years (four semesters)
Eligibility: Bachelor’s degree in any discipline (bridge courses are required for students from non-science backgrounds)
About the Programme
The objective of this programme is to carry out a holistic study of the world around us by integrating natural sciences with social sciences and humanities, thus, ensuring a multidisciplinary approach that transcends the usual boundaries of science and decision-making. This programme trains students in various interdisciplinary thinking skills and provides them with the ability to study and understand the environmental and sustainability issues with special emphasis on the ones faced by Northeast India. The course includes the biological and social matters concurrent with current environmental issues, conservation strategies, legal frameworks, ecological concerns, and technological advances.
The programme will help students:
- acquire and apply scientific knowledge about environmental issues to understand the essential underlying scientific concepts
- develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues by relating scientific knowledge with environmental, social, cultural (indigenous), and economic perspectives
- acquire the necessary problem-solving skills that would enable them to examine and propose alternatives to a variety of environmental problems through research and experiment
- critically evaluate their attitudes, behaviour, and values and consequently adopt a more sustainable lifestyle, an element of responsible global citizenship
The career options for graduates with MSc in Environmental Sciences are government and private sectors including industries and NGOs. The course in itself covers large areas of natural sciences and promises the graduates employment opportunities as scientists, academicians, environmentalists, environmental managers, researchers, project managers, environmental consultants, journalists, entrepreneurs (recycling, recovery and upscaling) and analysts. Those with postgraduate degrees are often selected for leadership and management positions.
