Jowai June 8: With the objective to create awareness and also to warn school students about the ill effects of Social Media which can lead to Cyber Crimes  the department of Computer Sciences,  Martin Luther Christian University today organised a Seminar on "Cyber Crimes and it's Impact on Youth",  in the District Central Library Hall, Jowai,  West Jaintia Hills.

The seminar was attended by Mr DN Jyrwa,  SP of the State Crime Record Bureau (SCRB), Shillong; Mr Vivek Syiem,  SP, Jowai,  West Khasi Hills; school students from Little Flower English School; North Liberty Higher Secondary School; HK  Singh Memorial Secondary School; Jowai Government Girls Higher Secondary School; Government Boys Higher Secondary School; faculty and students from the department of Computer Sciences,  MLCU.

Mr Jyrwa and Mr.  Syiem were also the resource persons in the seminar and they both gave presentations on Social Media and Cyber Crimes. While speaking to the students,  Mr.  Jyrwa emphasised on the fact that there are more than 300 social websites,  where the youth would meet and interact with people from across the world, whether they are real or under a fake profile can never be truly ascertained mostly until it's too late and a crime has already been committed using the ever important tool of the Internet.

He further added gave a list of do's and don'ts when the using any social media sites or just the Internet in general.

Mr Syiem,  during his presentation spoke at length about how people have been duped for money by cyber criminals who lured their victims into a relationship or other situation of trust.

He also stressed on the fact that social sites like Facebook,  Instagram and many like them can lure the youth into a sense of narcissism and can also lead to depression.

The students of MLCU presented a short role play on the ill use of the best Internet and how innocent victims are exploited by the cyber crimes.
