The Department of Music recently hosted an interactive and inspiring session with Mr. Bari Khonglah, a live sound engineer and recording engineer from Shillong. The event, titled “Beyond Sound: Building Musicianship and Professional Discipline,” aimed to encourage students to cultivate discipline, professionalism, and commitment in their musical journey.
With over four decades of experience in the music industry, Mr. Khonglah shared valuable insights from his extensive career in studio recording, live sound management, and music production. Reflecting on his early years, he spoke about his involvement in music production with various artists, band, church choirs, and so on. He described the challenges and excitement of working with limited technology back then while maintaining a passion for musical excellence.
Addressing his role as a music critic, Mr. Khonglah discussed the importance of feedback in helping artists growth. Although never officially recognized as a critic, he emphasized that honest critique should always aim to build, not discourage. “Criticism, when delivered with sincerity, helps artists see beyond performance; it becomes part of their artistic growth,” he said.
The session also discussed the current Shillong and North East music scene, where Mr. Khonglah pointed out various issues related to the growth and decline of the music in the region. He encouraged young musicians to focus on authenticity, creativity, and consistency. From a technological perspective, he observed that today’s artists enjoy greater accessibility and convenience, but also face the challenge of maintaining originality amid rapid digital change.
On the topic “Beyond the Music: Building a Sustainable Music Career,” Mr. Khonglah outlined key steps for longevity in the industry: continuous learning, collaboration, community engagement, and maintaining artistic integrity. He urged students to treat music not only as a course of study but as a passion that demands dedication and professionalism.
Beyond sound and technology, Mr. Khonglah spoke about how music has shaped his personal well-being and worldview. On the subject of AI-generated music, he remarked that while artificial intelligence can enhance creativity, it cannot replicate the emotional depth and human touch that define genuine artistry.
Concluding his address, Mr. Khonglah encouraged students to pursue music with sincerity and purpose:
“Musicianship is not just about skill it’s about character, commitment, and the willingness to grow both as an artist and as a person.”
The Department expressed deep appreciation to Mr. Khonglah for his time, insight, and contribution. The session left students inspired, reinforcing the Department’s mission to nurture holistic musicianship and artistic professionalism among its learners.
