On February 18, the Department of Music from Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) commenced their week-long Kolkata study tour with a vibrant and memorable performance at the iconic Trincas Restaurant and Bar in Kolkata. The performance marked the official beginning of an immersive academic and cultural engagement designed to provide students with meaningful exposure to the city’s rich artistic landscape.
Trincas holds a storied connection with musicians from Shillong, dating back to the 1960s when many artists from the Northeast performed regularly at the celebrated venue. Over the decades, its stage has hosted distinguished performers, including the late Toto Wallang, father of renowned blues guitarist Rudy Wallang. This historic association made the evening particularly significant for the students, as they carried forward a legacy of musical exchange between Shillong and Kolkata.
The evening began with a thoughtful historical tribute by Trincas proprietor Anand Puri, who warmly welcomed the MLCU delegation to the legendary stage. He reflected on the enduring bond between the venue and Northeast musicians, setting an inspiring tone for the performance.
The students presented a powerful and diverse repertoire that celebrated the rich cultural traditions of the Northeast. Through Khasi, Galo, Nishi, Tangkhul, and Bodo folk songs, they highlighted the region’s vibrant musical heritage, characterized by distinctive rhythms, harmonies, and storytelling traditions. Demonstrating impressive versatility and creativity, the ensemble also offered experimental renditions of popular Bollywood classics alongside lively interpretations of Goan folk music, seamlessly blending tradition with contemporary expression.
Beyond artistic presentation, the performance served as an invaluable professional learning experience. It provided students with first-hand exposure to live stage dynamics, audience engagement, and performance discipline outside the academic setting. The enthusiastic applause and positive reception from the audience affirmed the quality of their presentation and marked a successful and inspiring beginning to their educational journey in Kolkata.
