March 8th 2022

The Centre for Gender Equity and Diversity Education and Research (GENDER), MLCU organized a panel discussion on the theme “Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”. Dr. R.Jennifer War, Dean, Academics and HoD, Centre for GENDER, MLCU in her welcome note recognized the contribution of women and girls around the world, who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response, to build a more sustainable future for all. While hinting at elements of patriarchy in the matrilineal context of Meghalaya, Dr.War drew our attention to the notion of bias as that which is inevitable in our ethical and political positions, hence the need to acknowledge them, in particular our gender biases.

The keynote address was given by Dr. Glenn C. Kharkongor Chancellor, MLCU who highlighted the many challenges that women face in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr.Glenn Kharkongor also set an agenda for the university to concretize steps to further gender equality in the society.

Prof. I.M. Syiem, Chairperson, Meghalaya State Commission for Protection of Child Rights was the guest speaker of the event. Prof. Syiem while drawing our attention to the intersections of gender, caste, class and race, pointed to the dynamics of a society in transition and the need to connect with each other and with nature with a sense of compassion.

Dr. Vincent T. Darlong, Director, Centre for Sustainable Development Studies, MLCU in his talk, highlighted the global progress that has been made towards women’s empowerment since 1911 until today and presented the diversity of women’s experience across tribal communities in North East India and central India.

The concluding remarks were given by Prof. T.K. Kharbamon, Vice Chancellor, MLCU who as a beacon of women in leadership, cited the many inspirational women who have paved the way for gender parity in leadership roles.
