Women in Sport Seminar

The office of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women (MSCW) in collaboration with the School of Social Work at Martin Luther Christian University (MLCU) organised a seminar on ‘Women in Sport’ here today.

The objective was to change the mindset, encourage participation and promote young girls in sports and physical education.

The seminar started with the address from Candida Kharsyntiew, member of the MSCW. She spoke about the importance of the commission in promoting women’s rights and how this seminar was organised as the commission felt the need to address the subject of women in sports.

Rebina Subba, former member of the MSCW), spoke on gender sensitisation with special focus on women in sports. This was followed by a presentation of achievements, experiences and challenges from three districts – Ri-Bhoi represented by Margaret Pathaw, Eastern West Khasi Hills represented by Ibahun Kurbah, and East Khasi Hills represented by Eva Waynie Marbaniang.

A group discussion was also held divided on the sub-themes of women’s representation in sports facilitated by Dahunlyne Shylla, promoting young girls in physical education facilitated by Marbabiang Syiemlieh, and gender equality in sports facilitated by Deidi Banmer Nongrum.
